Menorca storm: man, 75, found dead off Cala en Brut
Menorca storm: police identify a 75-year-old man found dead in the sea off Cala en Brut, near Ciutadella on Menorca, but still do not know how he died. Emergency services were alerted at about 18.00 on Monday, while yellow and orange warnings for rain and thunderstorms were in force. The Civil Guard says he was a Spanish national who lived in Ciutadella.
Found offshore during storm Adam
Local police called the Civil Guard and Menorca firefighters after the body was spotted floating between 20 and 30 metres from shore. Firefighters reached him by boat and took him to Ciutadella’s old harbour. A judicial team attended at about 20.45, and judicial police took over the case. The sea was in poor condition during storm Adam, a weather system known as a DANA.
Fingerprints settle his identity
The man wore only a swimsuit and had no identification. Civil Guard officers spent three days trying to find out who he was, including visits to hotels and other tourist businesses in the area.
On Wednesday, investigators matched his fingerprints to those of a man reported missing to the National Police that day. A post-mortem examination was also carried out on Wednesday. Its findings are expected to show whether he drowned or suffered a medical problem.
He is counted as the sixth death associated with Adam’s passage across the Mediterranean. Whether the storm caused his death remains unknown.
