Mallorca storm nears: sport halted after 87 island incidents
Mallorca, in the Balearic Islands, faces an approaching storm on Sunday, 18 October: authorities suspend sporting activities as emergency service 112 reports 87 weather-related incidents across the islands. On Eivissa and Formentera, floodwater has reached businesses and public roads. Emergency director Pablo Gárriz says the storm that hit those islands on Sunday morning is heading towards Mallorca in the coming hours.
Formentera accounts for 52 of the incidents, Eivissa for 34 and Mallorca for one. The emergency service has dealt with flooding at 52 businesses and on 18 public roads and spaces. Fallen trees and obstructions on roads have caused further problems. On Eivissa, a service road by the motorway to the airport was closed early in the morning because of possible flooding. Crews are working to reopen a lane; the airport remains accessible by other roads.
Gárriz says the worst of storm Adam on Sunday appears to have passed, but warns that rain already on the ground is adding to the problems caused by heavy downpours. The Balearic government expects another band of rain over Eivissa and Formentera this afternoon and urges people not to mistake the break in the weather for an end to the storm. Emergency crews are using the lull to prepare. Authorities are watching conditions on all three islands, while rain could also reach Menorca overnight from Monday into Tuesday.
