Mallorca storm: 860 face power cuts

Power cuts still affect 860 users in northern Mallorca as crews repair eight medium-voltage power lines after Wednesday, 10 September’s storm. At Port des Canonge in Banyalbufar, fallen pine trees have disrupted electricity supplies to some homes and forced the closure of the access road. The Directorate-General for Emergencies and Interior is coordinating the recovery after rain, thunderstorms and strong winds caused 185 incidents across Mallorca.

Emergency coordination centre 112 handled 210 incidents across the Balearic Islands from Wednesday midday to Thursday at 12.00: 185 were on Mallorca, 11 on Menorca, four on Eivissa and nine had no recorded location. Most have been dealt with, with around 17 still unresolved.

Fallen trees also damaged the electricity network in other parts of Mallorca and on Menorca, initially leaving more than 17,000 users without supply. Generators have been installed to cover part of the service while repairs continue. The eight medium-voltage lines affect 860 users in the north and 327 in eastern Mallorca; a further 285 users have faults on lower-voltage lines.

Port des Canonge is the worst-hit area and remains in recovery. A mobile command post there brings together Ibanat, Mallorca Fire Service, the Council of Mallorca’s Roads Department and Banyalbufar Town Hall services.

Mallorca has moved into the normalisation phase under the Meteobal plan, aimed at restoring essential services. The most common call-outs were for trees falling onto roads, with 51 interventions. Crews also dealt with 31 flooded buildings, 21 cases of damaged street furniture, 20 interruptions to essential services and 12 flooded public roads.
