Mallorca storm damage: more than 80 rebuild power grid

More than 80 people are rebuilding Mallorca’s power grid after the storm on 9 September damaged lines and brought down supports in Valldemossa, Esporles and Banyalbufar. The storm initially disrupted electricity supplies for around 17,000 customers across Mallorca and Menorca. E-distribución, Endesa’s network subsidiary, says power returned gradually in the days after the storm.

The worst damage was reported in the three Mallorca municipalities, where strong winds bent or knocked down several electricity supports. Fallen trees, branches and other debris also damaged overhead lines.

Generators keep supplies running

E-distribución has placed 14 generators at points across the network while more difficult repairs continue. The company says the generators have kept a temporary supply running in the hardest-hit areas.

There are 63 specialists working directly on damaged installations. A further 18 staff in medium- and low-voltage control centres are coordinating operations and switching parts of the network remotely. The workforce includes Endesa staff, contractors and reinforcement teams sent from other islands and mainland Spain.

Fallen trees slow repairs

Getting to some damaged sites remains one of the main obstacles. Crews are also working in woodland where branches, trunks and fallen vegetation have piled up.

In many cases, access has to be cleared and trees removed before repairs to the electricity network can begin. Endesa says it is coordinating the work with the Balearic Government’s Directorate General for Emergencies and Interior and the affected town halls.
