Mallorca storm disrupts UIB classes and Palma metro

A storm has forced the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) in Palma, Mallorca, to suspend some teaching on Wednesday, 9 September. The university expects normal activity to resume on Thursday. Technicians are assessing how far the weather has affected campus infrastructure.

Lightning struck the metro’s overhead power line near Son Sardina, stopping trains between Son Sardina and Parc Bit in both directions. Serveis Ferroviaris de Mallorca, the island’s rail operator, later restored the service shortly after 19.00.

Students who remained on campus were able to shelter in the bar at the Ramon Llull building while waiting for trains to run again. Services between Camí del Reis and Parc Bit are temporarily using only track one, while trains between Vía Asima and Intermodal are running on both tracks. The operator warns that delays may still follow.
