Mallorca storm warning: 40 litres of rain an hour

Mallorca faces up to 40 litres of rain per square metre in an hour on Thursday afternoon as a second storm front moves across the island. The Balearic Government has kept its orange warning for rain and thunderstorms in force across the islands. A yellow warning for coastal conditions also remains in place on Mallorca and Menorca.

The first of two storm fronts is expected before dawn, mainly over the sea between the Pityusic Islands and Mallorca, though Eivissa and Formentera could also be hit. The second is forecast to reach Eivissa and Formentera from 12.00 to 15.00, before moving on to Mallorca between 15.00 and 18.00.

Spain's state weather agency, Aemet, expects the same hourly rainfall totals from both fronts. Wind gusts are forecast to stay below 90 kilometres per hour. Menorca remains under an orange warning until 8.00, although Aemet considers the storm's likely impact there residual.

Roads and low-lying areas at risk

The Directorate General for Emergencies and Interior says conditions can change suddenly. Intense rain could bring local flooding, pools of water and disruption on roads, in torrents and in drainage areas.

The authorities urge people to avoid unnecessary journeys. Anyone who must travel should take extra care and should not cross flooded ground on foot or by vehicle.

People are also being told to keep away from torrents, low-lying spots and places where water can collect. They should not stop or park in flood-prone areas, on bridges, at fords or near river mouths.

At home, the Government advises closing doors and windows, moving objects that could be swept away indoors, and taking steps to stop water entering. Where there is a risk of water getting inside, it recommends switching off the main electricity supply and closing stopcocks. Basements, garages and other low or flood-prone spaces should be avoided.

The Meteobal Plan's technical advisory committee is due to assess the situation again at 9.00 on Thursday. In an emergency, call 112.
