Mallorca storm warning remains in force as severe storms approach

Spain’s Civil Protection authority has kept the Mallorca storm warning in place on Thursday, 20 August, for Mallorca, in Spain’s Balearic Islands, and neighbouring Menorca. The State Meteorological Agency forecasts very severe thunderstorms overnight into Friday, with very strong or potentially hurricane-force gusts.

Storms are expected to reach the Balearic Islands late on Thursday. Further rain may affect the islands on Friday, though it is expected to be more scattered and could still be locally heavy or very heavy.

Flooding and lightning safety advice

Civil Protection has urged drivers to slow down, take particular care and avoid stopping where large volumes of water may flow. Vehicles should not be left in flood-prone locations, where rapidly rising water can damage or sweep them away.

People should not cross flooded roads, fords or other inundated sections on foot or by car. In torrential rain, Civil Protection advises moving to higher ground and not trying to retrieve a vehicle from floodwater.

Away from built-up areas, people are advised to keep clear of rivers, torrents and low-lying ground. Lightning can also pose a risk in towns, where shelter near buildings is recommended; a closed vehicle can offer protection during a storm. Those caught outdoors should avoid trees, fences and metal objects.
