Mallorca storms trigger 26 call-outs as rain returns

Storms have triggered 26 emergency call-outs across Mallorca since Wednesday afternoon, with flooded buildings, fallen trees and two fires among the incidents. Palma, Binissalem and Inca were affected as heavy rain swept the island overnight. Spain's State Meteorological Agency, Aemet, has kept a yellow warning for rain and thunderstorms in place until 20:00 on Thursday, while a yellow coastal warning also remains active.

Emergency services have urged people to avoid unnecessary journeys. Call-outs have included obstructions on roads, leaks and spills, as well as falling parts of urban structures.

Downpours hit overnight

Mallorca saw between 30 and 50 litres of rain per square metre in an hour during the night from Wednesday to Thursday. Aemet recorded 50 litres in Binissalem, Son Torrella and Llucmajor.

Some parts of the Serra de Tramuntana received almost 80 litres over a spell lasting two to three hours.

A new band of rain and thunderstorms is expected to reach Ibiza and Formentera from midday, where an orange warning remains in force until about 18:00. It could bring up to 50 litres per square metre in an hour and 80 litres in two to three hours before weakening.

The same front may move towards Mallorca later in the afternoon, but Aemet expects less intense rain there.

Further storms possible after midnight

Thunderstorms could strengthen again from midnight and affect Mallorca, Ibiza and Formentera once more. Aemet says the next front may bring up to 50 litres per square metre in an hour, with totals of up to 80 litres across a few hours.

The agency expects to issue an orange warning for Mallorca as the storms return. The unsettled weather could last until Friday midday, before easing from Friday afternoon.
