Mallorca farms seek stream clean-up cash as fund triples
Mallorca’s five applications for stream clean-up money total €115,300: the Balearic government is raising its farm grant fund from €300,000 to €907,200 after bids across the islands outstrip the original budget. On Monday, 5 October 2026, Balearic minister for the sea and water cycle Juan Manuel Lafuente visits two cleared stretches on Menorca and discusses the bigger fund with farming representatives. Crews have cleared 1,611 metres of stream at the two sites.
Reeds cleared from Menorca’s streams
At Vergers de Sant Joan in Maó, Menorca, crews cleared reeds, other plants and accumulated rootstocks from 704 metres of stream. At Puntarró-Santa Catalina-Na Vermella, they removed plants and built-up material along 907 metres, spread across four stretches.
The Balearic government says it has carried out 21 stream maintenance jobs on Menorca this year, including work in Maó, Es Mercadal, Ferreries and Es Migjorn Gran. Between May and September, the work covered a combined 3,986 metres.
Farm bids exceed the original budget
The grants cover eligible work on streams that cross or border farms. Once applications closed, the government had received 28 bids seeking €907,242 in all. Menorca accounted for 22 applications worth €781,880; Eivissa submitted one worth €10,075.
The fund now stands at €907,200. Applicants can receive money only if their proposed work meets the grant scheme’s rules.
