Palma clears streams for heavy rain

Palma, Mallorca, is clearing plants, rubbish and sediment from urban stream beds to help water flow during heavy rain. Palma City Council said on Monday, 28 September, that crews are working across the city. The work will continue over the coming days.

Crews are working along the Vileta stream between the streets of Son Xigala, Concha Espina, Nàpols and Pardo Bazán, and along the Son Xigala stream between Ramon Despuig street and CIDE. Other sites include the sa Riera stream at Sa Riera and Canòdrom Park, and the Sant Agustí stream by Holanda and Victorio Luzuriaga streets.

The na Bàrbara stream is being cleared between Son Pacs and the Ma-11, between the Sóller road and the Sóller railway line, and through the Son Castelló industrial estate near San Francisco de Sales. Work also covers the sa Riera valley beside CEIP Son Anglada and the Son Armadams stream between Bellver and Son Dureta.

Workers are cutting back herbaceous plants, shrubs and invasive vegetation. They are also removing waste, plant debris, sediment and other material that could obstruct the water.
