Spain’s university rectors want a national plan for affordable student housing as parties prepare for the 29 November general election. In Madrid on 27 October, the Conference of Rectors of Spanish Universities (CRUE) sets out ten demands for parties contesting the vote. The list also calls for reliable university funding and a long-term policy that political parties can agree on.

The rectors say students should have an equal chance to enter university and stay there. They want more secure and attractive careers for teaching, research and management staff, as well as modern teaching buildings and scientific and digital facilities.

The list calls for less paperwork and more independence for universities. It also seeks a bigger role for them in research and innovation, stronger links with Europe and the wider world, and a greater contribution to economic development, social cohesion and balance between regions.

The rectors want public authorities to back a national pact on universities, science and knowledge. CRUE says it will keep working to strengthen public universities.
