Palma UIB joins outcry over student murder in Mexico

Palma’s University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) has joined Spain’s university leaders in condemning the murder of a 21-year-old University of Granada student during an academic exchange in Mexico. The UIB backed a statement by the Conference of Rectors of Spanish Universities (CRUE) on 15 September. CRUE sent its condolences to the student’s family and loved ones, and support to the University of Granada and the university community hosting her in Mexico.

The rectors called the killing an “intolerable” act of violence. They said the student had begun her international experience with hope and had her life ahead of her.

CRUE said the tragedy again highlights the vulnerability and insecurity many women still face. It said no woman should feel unprotected or have her freedom to study, travel or pursue her life plans restricted. The group said it expects justice to establish responsibility as quickly as possible.
