284 students start courses at Menorca university

Menorca’s university site begins the 2026-27 academic year with 284 students in class on Tuesday. Of those, 255 are taking undergraduate courses and 29 are on the teacher-training master’s degree. The University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) says about 100 are new undergraduate entrants, though the total may still change as enrolment remains open.

Registration and enrolment are also still available for university master’s degrees and other training courses.

Opening ceremony for the new academic year

The UIB holds its formal opening ceremony on Tuesday, alongside an event for 19 students who completed their undergraduate degrees in the previous academic year. Law graduates Paula Cànovas and Yalmadis Batista will speak for the group.

UIB rector Jaume Carot will chair the event, joined by Education and Universities councillor Antoni Vera, Consell de Menorca president Adolfo Vilafranca and Alaior mayor Josep Lluís Benejam. Modern History professor Miquel Josep Deyà will give the opening lecture, on the debate over the limits of state power in the 16th and 17th centuries.

Courses and a long Menorca record

The Menorca site offers face-to-face degrees in Business Administration, Law, the joint Early Childhood and Primary Education degree, Nursing, Tourism and Computer Engineering. It also runs the teacher-training master’s degree.

The Menorca campus, along with UIB sites on Ibiza and Formentera, opened in the 1997-98 academic year. Since then, 873 students have graduated from the Menorca site and 346 have completed postgraduate study there — 1,219 qualifications in all, with women accounting for 63.8 per cent.

The UIB’s Open University for Older People had 238 students in the last academic year.
