Suicide prevention: 90 psychologists join Balearics schools

Ninety educational psychologists are joining schools across the Balearic Islands as the new school year begins on Thursday. On World Suicide Prevention Day, 10 September, Balearic Government president Marga Prohens urged people facing emotional distress or suicidal thoughts to talk, listen, stay alongside others and seek help. Writing on X, she said: “Every conversation counts.”

Prohens said responsible discussion of suicide does not increase the risk. Instead, she said, it can help spot suffering and challenge stigma, particularly among young people.

More support in schools

The 90 educational psychologists are 11 more than in the previous school year. Idisba, the research institute, will also carry out a suicide-prevention study involving 4,300 teenagers across the islands.

Training and help lines

The Directorate General for Mental Health has trained around 300 pupils in awareness and prevention, according to Prohens. Specialist training has also been guaranteed for health and social care workers, local police, security forces and firefighters.
