Sunken boat lifted from Ibiza bay after fuel slick

A sunken boat has been lifted from Sant Antoni de Portmany bay on Ibiza after a fuel slick led to a yellow warning flag at Es Pouet beach. The owner arranged for a specialist firm to raise the vessel on Monday, 22 September, and take it to dry dock. Checks have since found no trace of the slick in the sea.

The boat had sunk a short distance off sa Punta des Molí, where it was moored in an unauthorised area. Sant Antoni de Portmany Council’s Environment Department oversaw the recovery because of the potential risk to nearby bathing areas.

Fuel slick drifted towards Es Pouet

The sinking happened outside the bathing zone, but wind pushed the fuel slick towards Es Pouet beach. As a precaution, the council replaced the green flag with a yellow one.

Ports IB, Salvamento Marítimo, Capitanía Marítima and Sant Antoni de Portmany Council began by putting anti-pollution barriers in place. The barriers were intended to contain the fuel and limit any further impact on the sea.

Bay remains under watch

Although no fuel remains have been detected, the council will keep the area under supervision. It will monitor the bay to ensure safety conditions and environmental quality remain unchanged.
