Mallorca: Alcúdia backs supported homes for disabled people
More than 400 people in Alcúdia, Mallorca, have a recognised disability above 33%: the town council now backs a plan for supported homes in the municipality. The council has approved a Socialist motion calling for council-owned flats to be made available for that purpose, according to a report on 6 October. Agüi Lobo, general secretary of Alcúdia’s Socialist association, says families of people with disabilities helped prepare the proposal.
Many people covered by the figure live with ageing parents. Their families worry about what will happen when those parents are no longer there. Lobo wants existing flats used so people can remain in Alcúdia, close to their families.
The motion asks Alcúdia town council to make its flats available to the Mallorca Island Council for conversion into supported homes. It also calls for money in the town’s 2027 budget to adapt and equip them and improve accessibility.
The Mallorca Island Council and Balearic government are asked to fund professional support through places in the Disability Care Network. The motion also calls for a working group with social organisations and for the town to reserve 5% of homes in future public housing developments for more supported flats.
