Marbella surgeon shot dead: Balearic doctors demand action
Gunfire kills a 57-year-old surgeon at his clinic in Marbella, Málaga province, on Wednesday at about 18.00: doctors in the Balearic Islands demand stronger protection for medical staff. He appears to have been hit several times in the head. In Palma, Mallorca, the Official College of Doctors of the Balearic Islands condemns the killing and sends condolences to his family and colleagues.
The college says the death is an extreme example of a rise in assaults and violent behaviour directed at doctors. It says attacks on healthcare workers must not be played down.
It calls for stronger measures to prevent attacks, protect medical staff and pursue those responsible. The college says it trusts police and the courts to establish what happened and determine responsibility.
