Mallorca sustainability campus opens at UIB in Palma

The University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) is turning outdoor space at its campus in Palma, Mallorca, into a sustainability classroom. The pilot scheme opens next Wednesday with talks, workshops, citizen-science activities and community action for the university community and the public. Elena Baraza, director of the Office for Sustainability Transition and Innovation, will introduce the project before a walk around the campus sites involved.

Known as Aula de Natura UIB, the monthly programme links global environmental challenges to action on campus. It covers biodiversity, responsible consumption, waste management and ecosystem conservation, working with environmental and social organisations. The university says it hopes the pilot will become permanent.

A birdwatching session is scheduled for 26 September from 08.00 to 11.00. A talk on responsible consumption and the circular economy follows on 17 October, running from 10.00 to 14.00.

Botany and forest management are on the agenda on 14 November between 10.00 and 14.00. The final listed event is a composting workshop on 12 December, also scheduled for 10.00 to 14.00.
