Palma loses PSIB founder Antoni Tarabini at 86

Palma, Mallorca, has lost sociologist and PSIB founder Antoni Tarabini, who died on Monday, 21 September, aged 86. The party announced his death in a post on X, saying the society he cared for had lost one of its reference figures. Tarabini was born in Palma in 1940 and helped found the PSIB in 1976.

In 1979, after the arrival of democracy, he stood as the PSOE candidate for mayor of Calvià. He later became Palma City Council’s councillor for Tourism, Transport and Traffic during the term of socialist mayor Ramon Aguiló.

The PSIB said Tarabini had devoted his life to critical, committed work towards shared ambitions. It said he had inspired the party and left behind both a huge void and a legacy for generations.

Francina Armengol, president of the Congress of Deputies, also paid tribute in a post on X. She described him as a loved, committed and generous man who spent much of his life defending democracy, social justice and a freer, more equal society. Armengol offered her condolences to his family.
