Mallorca travel: Tarjeta Única goes mobile on 22 September
From Tuesday 22 September, passengers on Mallorca will be able to carry the Tarjeta Única or Tarjeta Intermodal on their phone. The new TIB app will allow cardholders to use a virtual card — a digital version stored on a mobile — on TIB and EMT Palma buses, as well as SFM trains and the metro. It will also show the real-time position of buses at each stop.
Passengers can save favourite stops and routes, then receive alerts linked to those selections. The app will be available through Google Play and the Apple Store.
More than 600 Mallorca residents tested the virtual card after the pilot began in May. The trial started on the metro before expanding to trains and buses, allowing the authorities to check mobile payments and gather feedback before the public launch.
The Govern says 83% of public transport users are residents with a Tarjeta Única or Tarjeta Intermodal. José Luis Mateo, the regional housing, territory and mobility minister, said the app was aimed at improving the service for people living on the island.
Live information for trains and the metro is due to be added later. Serveis Ferroviaris de Mallorca is working with TIB to bring actual train and metro arrival information into the app; it is already available on the SFM website.
The app and the move to digital cards form part of a €3 million package of transport technology improvements, funded through European Next Generation money.
