Madrid tax agency protest: hundreds demand more staff

Hundreds of delegates from across Spain protest outside the Ministry of Finance in Madrid, Spain, on Wednesday, 30 September: they want more staff at the tax agency, better working conditions and action on signed agreements. The union Central Sindical Independiente y de Funcionarios (CSIF) called the demonstration.

The protest follows demonstrations that began on 6 May. Staff at every workplace also stopped work for an hour on 8 June. CSIF says Spain’s State Tax Administration Agency (AEAT) is blocking talks on working conditions.

At the centre of the dispute is a 2024 agreement. CSIF says the agency promised to review career progression for all employees, which the union says has been blocked since 2019, costing staff income. The agreement also covers remote working, greater protection for Customs Surveillance Service staff through recognition of their work as a high-risk profession, and an administrative career structure.

CSIF says staff are stretched by shortages. It warns of further protests across Spain in the coming months unless the agency returns to talks and acts on outstanding agreements.
