Menorca taxi protest halts calls and street pickups

On Menorca, in the Balearic Islands, passengers must go to an official taxi rank from Wednesday, 30 September. Drivers are stopping call-centre bookings and will no longer pick up people who hail them in the street. The restrictions are part of a protest over taxi fares.

Drivers say fares have not changed since 2021, making Menorca the only Balearic island without an increase in that time. They say they have submitted economic studies to Menorca Island Council every year to support a rise but have received no response. With fuel and maintenance costs climbing, the drivers say the trade is making losses of 20 to 25 per cent.

The restrictions will stay in place, the drivers say, until Juan Manuel Delgado, the island councillor responsible for transport, agrees to talks with taxi representatives from the Balearic Transport Business Federation on Menorca. They have asked residents and visitors for understanding and advised anyone needing a taxi to go to a rank in one of the island’s municipalities.
