Mallorca teachers miss hard-to-fill job allowance

Teachers in hard-to-fill subjects on Mallorca are receiving no extra allowance despite meeting the conditions, the union Alternativa Docent says. The union made the claim in Palma on 4 September as it called on the Ministry of Education and Universities to pay the supplement without favouring particular specialisms. The ministry led by Antoni Vera plans to limit the payments to certain specialities, according to the union.

Alternativa Docent said extra pay for posts that are difficult to fill can help attract and keep staff. But it called the planned scheme “unacceptable”, arguing that it would directly disadvantage some groups of teachers.

The union said the proposal breaks the principle of equal work, equal pay. It opposes a system in public education where teachers’ pay depends on supply and demand, and wants the allowance improved and extended to all teachers, regardless of subject or teaching body.
