Mallorca teachers take unpaid bonuses fight to court

Teachers at non-university schools across the Balearics are taking their fight for full bonus payments to court in Palma. Their union, STEI, began the legal action on 13 September. It is seeking four years of back payments, plus statutory interest.

STEI says the extra payments leave out pay supplements which it believes should be included under current rules. These include a regional allowance of between 840 and 1,240 euros, depending on the number of six-year service periods, and a career-progression allowance worth about 162 euros a year.

The union wants both supplements included in each extra payment for teaching staff. It turned to the courts after the administration rejected its earlier claim.

STEI warned that the case could take several years to resolve.
