Balearic housing squeeze makes teaching posts harder to fill
In Palma, Mallorca, the housing squeeze is making some teaching posts across the Balearic Islands harder to fill. Teachers’ union ANPE raised the problem with Antoni Vera, the Balearic Islands’ minister for Education and Universities, on Tuesday, 27 October. It says housing costs affect whether teachers come to the islands or stay.
Help with housing and travel
ANPE wants a new education agreement to include salary advances, financial help for substitute teachers who must move home, and compensation for travel between islands. Its Balearic president, Víctor Villatoro, says taking a teaching job on the islands should not become a financial problem.
The union also wants the government to honour earlier agreements in full. It welcomes improvements already made to pay and working conditions, particularly extra payments for posts that are hard to fill, but says the high cost of living calls for more action.
More support in schools
ANPE says population growth and an increase in pupils who enter the school system later are creating new demands. It wants more support staff, wider language and cultural welcome programmes, and more time for teachers to help individual pupils and work with families.
The union is also pressing for less paperwork, the full restoration of bonus payments and lasting solutions for cooling schools. It wants its proposals turned into funded measures. ANPE has not announced a decision on its latest demands.
