Mallorca teachers can seek second jobs in orchestras
On Mallorca, in the Balearic Islands, teachers at public schools below university level can seek second jobs with local orchestras or municipal music schools. The Balearic regional government approved the measure on 23 October 2026, but each extra job still needs permission.
Local bands, the Balearic Symphony Orchestra Foundation and the Balearic Higher Conservatory of Music are also covered in certain cases. The measure extends to teachers at the conservatory and municipal music-school staff who work at centres run by different councils.
Government spokesman Antoni Costa said the decision would make it easier to combine teaching with performing. Public institutions have struggled to fill specialist posts, particularly part-time ones. The government also wants music teachers and professional performers to share more of their experience.
Approval is not automatic. The relevant authority must decide each case under rules covering timetables, working hours, pay and impartiality in public duties.
