4,000 Mallorca teachers seek €800 payback in Palma

Around 4,000 teachers at state-subsidised schools across the Balearic Islands are waiting for an average €800 each from a 2% pay cut made in 2020, according to UGT. The union will protest outside the Balearic Islands Ministry of Education in Palma on Tuesday, 29 September. It says the teachers should be paid on the same terms as colleagues in public schools.

The claim covers staff at mainstream state-subsidised schools and special education centres. UGT says it is not seeking a pay rise, but payment under an agreement already signed with the ministry.

Union accuses officials of bad faith

Jaume Coll, UGT’s representative for private and state-subsidised education, accused the administration of acting in “bad faith”. He said it had signed two agreements, then argued that its reading of the document did not provide for repayment of the 2% cut in state-subsidised education.

UGT’s teaching-sector secretary Azahar Tortonda said the dispute was about honouring that agreement. The union says the unpaid amount averages about €800 for each affected teacher.

A second payment remains unresolved

The first agreement, signed in November 2025, was intended to settle repayment of the 2% cut. A second deal followed in April 2026, bringing the payment deadline forward to the third quarter of this year.

UGT also fears that another outstanding sum will be delayed. That concerns the remaining 35% of debt built up between 2021 and 2024, linked to the carry-over effect of state pay rises of 2.9%.
