Mallorca teacher pay row: USO threatens dispute

Teachers at Mallorca’s state-funded private schools, known as concertada schools, face a possible collective labour dispute over 2020 pay rights. USO’s education federation in the Balearics has taken its complaint to the Balearic Islands Arbitration and Mediation Tribunal (Tamib) in Palma, Mallorca. On 11 September, the union said any pay recovery must match the terms offered to teachers in public schools.

USO says the Balearic Islands Education and Universities Ministry has failed to honour signed commitments. It has demanded an effective settlement before moving ahead with a collective labour dispute, a legal action involving workers as a group.

A Balearic government agreement dated 17 April 2026 said the 2020 recovery should be made on the same terms as in public education, following negotiations. It set the work to be carried out between the second and third quarters of 2026.

The union says the commitments were negotiated and later confirmed by the government, rather than being merely statements of intent. Its complaint asks for the pay recovery to be put into effect, with clear details on who qualifies, how sums will be calculated and when payments will be made.

USO Balearics education secretary-general Juan Carlos Lorenzo said the time for promises had ended. If the administration does not comply voluntarily, he said, the union will use its trade-union and legal options to enforce the agreements.
