Mallorca teacher posts could be ‘tailored’, union warns
Mallorca, 13 October: A teacher could win a school post, only for the post to disappear later, union SIAU warns in Palma. It says a draft decree from the Balearic Department of Education and Universities would leave too much room for decisions over who gets teaching jobs at public schools.
Posts made to fit an applicant
SIAU says the draft would allow some posts to demand such specific experience or training that they could be shaped around individual applicants. The union wants clear limits on those requirements.
It also objects to a provision allowing the department to scrap a post when certain features change for organisational reasons. SIAU says the draft does not do enough to protect a teacher who has already secured that post.
The union says unclear definitions of different types of posts could affect how long appointments last, as well as cover arrangements and the end of contracts. It also opposes a change that would bar philosophy teachers from support posts in language and social sciences, for which they are currently eligible.
Seven changes sought
SIAU has submitted seven amendments to the Balearic School Council. It also says the department repeatedly sends proposed rules to the council under an urgent procedure, leaving too little time to examine them.
If its demands are rejected and the decree passes in its current form, the union says it will challenge it in court.
