Mallorca teachers' extra pay: court takes up union claim

Mallorca’s non-university teachers could receive more in extra pay: a court in Palma, Mallorca, has agreed to consider a union claim over two salary allowances. The STEI union said on Thursday, 15 October, that it wants both counted in full in the extra payments made to non-university teachers across the Balearic Islands.

The claim challenges a decision by the Balearic Islands Ministry of Education and Universities, which rejected the union’s administrative appeal. STEI argues that, under its reading of Spain’s Basic Statute for Public Employees, regular salary allowances belong in those extra payments. It says the legal exceptions include payments for individual performance or exceptional duties.

STEI estimates that the regional allowance amounts to €840 to €1,240 a year, depending on a teacher’s six-year service periods. It puts the career progression allowance at about €162 a year. The union also wants payments it says are owed for the past four years, plus interest. The court has agreed to examine the claim, but has not ruled on it.
