Mallorca teachers’ pay protest over nearly €5m

In Palma, Mallorca, around 20 people protest outside the Balearic Ministry of Education and Universities on Tuesday, 29 September, demanding unpaid teachers’ wages. The union UGT says nearly €5 million is owed for 2020 alone. The claim centres on a 2% pay cut for teachers at state-funded private schools.

UGT estimates that around 4,200 teachers at those schools and at special education centres are affected. It puts the average amount owed to each worker at between €800 and €1,000. Teachers at public schools are already receiving the equivalent sum, the union says.

UGT says the Balearic government has failed to honour an agreement reached in April talks. It says the nearly €5 million for 2020 was budgeted for this year, but the ministry has not explained where the money came from or where it went. The union plans to keep protesting and has not ruled out legal action.
