Mallorca teachers’ strike: public schools face two days

Mallorca’s public non-university schools face a full teachers’ strike on 24 and 25 September. The walkout covers the whole working day, including teaching and non-teaching duties, and may extend to evening and night shifts where these apply. It has been called by the Independent National Union for Development and Innovation, known as Sindi-K, and is backed by the SIAU union.

The unions are protesting against what they describe as the misuse of temporary contracts in public education. They say years of repeated short-term appointments have harmed both staff security and the continuity of the service.

Minimum staffing stays in place

Schools will not be left without key staff. Every centre must keep its headteacher’s office and secretariat staffed during the strike.

Nurseries for children aged 0 to 3 must have one early-years educator for every three groups, or part of a group. The same ratio applies in the second stage of nursery education and special education centres.

In nursery and primary schools, one teacher is required for every three nursery groups and one for every four primary groups. Secondary institutes must have one teacher for every four groups.

Unions demand secure posts

SIAU says thousands of public-sector workers still lack real job security after years, and in some cases decades, of service. It is calling for stable posts for interim teachers, an effective answer to the use of temporary contracts and compliance with European Union law.

The union is part of a movement of more than 50 organisations, unions and public-sector employee groups. Its coalition, Líneas Rojas Innegociables, has asked the European Commission for effective redress for those affected and measures to end the consequences of temporary-contract abuse.
