Mallorca teachers' vote: proposed QR codes spark row
In Palma, Mallorca, a fault reading or checking a ballot code could put a teachers' union vote at risk: that is SIAU’s warning about proposed changes to the ballot papers. On 6 October 2026, the union said the election process had begun without enough information or safeguards.
SIAU says the administration wants a separate QR or CSV code on the ballot paper for each candidate list. It fears a problem reading or checking a code could affect whether a vote counts. The union says the rules governing the ballot papers do not provide for the change.
It also opposes making unions register candidates through a computer application. In SIAU’s view, registration with the coordinating electoral board is enough.
The union says it has yet to receive a stamped election timetable with voting hours, the names of electoral board members or an electoral roll. It says there is no email address for contacting the boards. SIAU has filed a formal complaint with the coordinating electoral boards, which run the process, asking them to set rules that comply with election law.
SIAU says it did not need to challenge the election process four years ago. Given how this one has begun, it doubts the same will be true this year.
