STEI calls for changes to TEI and ATE contracts in Palma

The STEI union has called on the Education and Universities Ministry to revise its contract model for early childhood education technicians (TEI) and educational technical assistants (ATE) in Palma, Mallorca. On Thursday, 20 August, it also urged the ministry to plan staffing requirements in schools.

The union said the nine-month contracts used for these roles do not cover the full academic year, despite serving ongoing needs at education centres. It said the arrangement, previously used for ATE staff, leaves workers repeatedly facing job insecurity and unemployment.

A recruitment round for 49 TEI posts had been expected at the end of July after staffing difficulties during the previous school year, STEI said. It added that only 10 posts were included, all on nine-month contracts.

According to the union, the contracts run from 1 September to 30 May, leaving children without their educator in June. STEI said the posts due to be awarded should instead be offered as three-year vacancies.
