Madrid tenants’ union joins pension march over rents
Madrid, Spain: A tenants’ union joins a pensioners’ march on 24 October, warning that higher rents could wipe out gains in pay and pensions. The Confederation of Tenants’ Unions says rising living costs are eating into the incomes of millions. It wants the campaign for public pensions, wages and housing to come together.
The union backs higher wages and pensions in 2027 to help people recover lost purchasing power. But without rules for the housing market, it argues, landlords could absorb those gains by raising rents.
The housing crisis does not stop at the young, the union says. More people of retirement age live in rented homes or help support relatives financially. It points to the general strike over housing and living costs on 11 November as the next chance to press for a decent standard of living.
