Mallorca tenants’ rally aims to build a general strike

Mallorca’s tenants’ union is calling people to Plaza de España in Palma, Mallorca, at 12.00 on Saturday. It wants the rally to help build towards a general strike. The protest follows the rejection of housing decrees by PP, Vox and Junts per Catalunya in Spain’s Congress of Deputies.

In a statement on Friday, the Sindicat de Llogateres de Mallorca accused the three parties of voting against the rights of thousands of tenants. The union said the rejected decrees offered only basic protections, but protections nonetheless. Its spokesperson, Celeste Rodríguez, said the protests would continue despite the vote.

At the rally, the union will call for permanent rental contracts, lower rents, the expropriation of investment funds it calls “vulture funds”, and an end to evictions. It has asked labour unions, workplace committees, neighbourhood associations, education centres and university groups to join in. Its aim is to turn that support into the organisation of a general strike.
