Mallorca’s Can Picafort has 24 businesses caught up in cases over terraces and other structures on public land: more than €429,000 is at stake, environmental group GOB says. On Tuesday, 3 November, the group called for joint inspections along Mallorca’s coast. It fears similar use of public land without permission may be happening elsewhere.

The businesses include restaurants, bars, supermarkets and hotels. GOB says the €429,000-plus total combines proposed fines with profits the businesses are being asked to hand over to the authorities. The group says the cases show that the problem on Can Picafort’s seafront is not confined to a few small businesses.

GOB wants the Balearic Government, Mallorca Island Council, the coastal authority Demarcación de Costas and coastal councils to inspect together. It also wants them to publish their findings, existing permits and any steps taken to restore lawful use of the land.

The group says three of the first six cases involve Laumae Garrido SLU, a company linked to Eugenio Garrido, Santa Margalida’s councillor for commerce and tourism. GOB called on 4 September for political accountability and for Garrido to lose his responsibilities for beach operations. It says it has received no response and no action has been taken, and is repeating that demand.
