Mallorca could see strong thunderstorms on Saturday

Mallorca, in Spain’s Balearic Islands, could see strong thunderstorms on Saturday: sudden downpours may flood low-lying areas. Spain’s State Meteorological Agency, Aemet, says strong showers are possible across the Balearics as storms spread. The unsettled weather began on Thursday and is expected to last at least until Sunday, 4 October.

Why the storms are spreading

Cold air higher in the atmosphere and moisture from the Mediterranean are driving the storms. Eastern and north-eastern mainland Spain are especially affected.

On Saturday, the coasts of Spain’s Valencian Community and Catalonia could receive more than 100 l/m2 in 12 hours. Aemet gives no such figure for Mallorca. It warns that heavy showers can cause sudden local flooding in low-lying areas, streams and dry riverbeds.

What comes next

On Sunday, a pocket of cold air higher in the atmosphere is expected to break away west of mainland Spain, keeping conditions unsettled. Aemet says it remains unclear exactly where and when the heaviest rain will fall. It advises people to follow updated forecasts and warnings over the coming hours.
