Tirme concession review sought by MÉS in Mallorca
MÉS per Mallorca called on 23 August in Palma, Mallorca, for an immediate review of Tirme’s concession to treat municipal solid waste on the island. The demand follows a report by the General Intervention of the Council of Mallorca which, according to the party, gave an unfavourable assessment and questioned the tariff formula.
MÉS said the report identifies a serious impact from the concession and warns that returns for a company operating an essential public service may be disproportionate. The party has also requested an independent, comprehensive audit of the contract.
Funding and profitability concerns
Since the end of 2023, more than €103 million has been allocated through credit modifications to contain, subsidise or regularise Tirme’s tariffs, MÉS said. The contribution this year was €41.4 million.
The party cited a 77% return mentioned in the report, arguing that the public administration bears a substantial share of the costs and risks while the private operator receives exceptional profits. Catalina Inés Perelló, MÉS spokesperson at the Council of Mallorca, said political responsibility for the concession must be addressed.
Calls for audit and future plan
MÉS wants the tariff formula revised immediately and has called for scrutiny of Tirme’s investments, costs and operations. It also wants profits and dividends examined.
The party further called for a new waste-management model to be prepared for when the current concession ends.
