Mallorca keeps €41m Tirme payment amid waste tariff row

Mallorca’s Parliament has refused to stop a €41 million payment to waste contractor Tirme. The money is intended to support solid-waste collection and treatment on Mallorca. PP and Vox voted down the PSIB proposal in the Finance and Budget Committee in Palma, Mallorca, on 22 September.

The Socialists said withdrawing the payment could help cut the waste charge without the Consell de Mallorca drawing further money from its reserves. They pointed to an unfavourable report by the Consell’s General Intervention department.

PSIB calls for tariff process to stop

PSIB deputy Llorenç Pou wanted the Consell to withdraw what would be its third extraordinary payment to Tirme during the current term. He said the sum was not justified given the company’s “extraordinary profits”, which he said had been documented by the Consell’s intervention service.

Pou also called for the administrative process for Tirme’s new waste tariffs to be suspended until a study has examined the company’s real costs.

€103m already approved for Tirme

The Consell de Mallorca has authorised €103 million in extraordinary transfers to Tirme during the current term. The money was approved in three instalments across 2023, 2024 and last July.

Pou said a review of Tirme’s tariff structure could show that some or all of that money could have gone elsewhere. He also raised a separate €50 million advance payment from the Govern for Tirme to treat waste brought from Eivissa, and called for a specific report by the Sindicatura de Comptes. None of the PSIB’s proposals won backing.
