Mallorca waste bill: Tirme tariff faces audit call

Mallorca's Tirme waste tariff faces a call for scrutiny when the Balearic Parliament meets in Palma at 10.00 on Tuesday. The PSIB wants the Sindicatura de Cuentas, the public audit body, to examine how the charge for treating urban waste is calculated. The PP will separately bring a motion on the crisis in Ceuta.

PSIB seeks review of Tirme calculations

The Socialist proposal asks for a dedicated report on the payment and compensation system used by the Consell de Mallorca and Tirme, the company holding the waste-treatment concession, to set the tariff.

It also calls for a study of Tirme's economic and financial balance. The audit body would also assess how much the company should receive for treating waste brought over from Eivissa.

Ceuta, housing and night trains on the agenda

The PP motion seeks Parliament's backing for support and solidarity with the people of Ceuta, Spain's territorial integrity and rejection of Morocco's claims over Ceuta and Melilla. It also asks Spain's central government for a specific plan for the Balearic Islands' sea border and for more European Union funding for border surveillance.

The sitting begins with questions to the Balearic Government. President Marga Prohens faces questions on whether housing should be for residents, whether she will stop the Balearic Islands becoming “the next Ceuta”, and action on climate change.

Before the two motions, Housing, Territory and Mobility Minister José Luis Mateo will answer an urgent MÉS per Mallorca interpellation on housing policy. He will also be asked for details of a promised improvement to summer night-train services.

Sea and Water Cycle Minister Juan Manuel Lafuente is due to answer four questions, including two on the dismissal of former Coast and Shoreline Director General Maria Joaquina Ferrer Matas and its alleged link to the management of sunbeds and umbrellas on Formentera beaches. Tourism, Culture and Sports Minister Jaume Bauzá will answer on his policies as the summer season enters its final stages, while Education and Universities Minister Antoni Vera will address the PISA 205 report.
