Mallorca blocks Tirme tariff review

The Balearic Parliament has rejected a call to review the Tirme waste tariff on Mallorca, despite a Council of Mallorca report that described the concession as unfavourable and carrying a “serious impact”. The vote took place on Tuesday, 15 September. The proposal, brought by the Socialist Party of the Balearic Islands (PSIB), had sought an investigation by the Sindicatura de Cuentas, the public audit body.

PSIB MP Llorenç Pou also called on the Council of Mallorca to halt the approval process for the 2026 tariff, which is under way. He said the amount paid was far higher than Tirme’s real cost of providing the service, producing profits “outside all logic”.

The council’s intervention report, issued at the end of July, also says the tariff adjustment does not use real data, Pou said. He opposed measures presented as a way to curb tariff increases, arguing that they clash with what he called an already oversized tariff.

People’s Party MP Margalida Pocoví said action would be taken rigorously, transparently and responsibly, following the recommendations in intervention, legal and audit reports. If needed, she said, the Council of Mallorca could seek opinions from the Consell Consultiu and the Sindicatura de Cuentas.
