Mallorca waste fees: PSIB challenges €41 million for Tirme

PSIB is challenging a plan to give 41 million euros more to Tirme, Mallorca’s waste-service concessionaire, while changing the fee for rubbish collection. Catalina Cladera, the party’s spokesperson, said on Thursday, 10 September, that PSIB will file objections to the agreement at the Consell de Mallorca, the Mallorca Island Council.

Cladera wants an immediate halt to both the budget change and the review of the municipal solid-waste fee. Municipalities and groups of municipalities pay the charge for rubbish collection. Both measures were approved in July.

She said the Island Council has paid Tirme more than 100 million euros over three years of the current term, calling the sum unjustifiable and harmful to the public interest.

Cladera also pointed to what she described as a damning report by the Consell de Mallorca’s Intervention on Tirme’s management. She said it sets out actions that could amount to the misuse of public funds.

The PSIB spokesperson called on the Island Council’s governing team to act with the greatest caution and examine the whole operation thoroughly. She said the review must go as far as necessary.
