Mallorca mourns 69 people killed in the Toledo train crash: about 100 people stand by the tracks at Palma Intermodal station in Palma, Mallorca, for a minute’s silence on Thursday morning. Wednesday’s crash in Urda has also left more than 100 injured. Balearic government president Marga Prohens and staff from Serveis Ferroviaris de Mallorca, the island’s railway operator, join the tribute.

Prohens points to rail safety spending

After the silence, Prohens offers support to railway staff and seeks to reassure passengers. She says safety has been an “absolute priority” for her government, which has spent €110 million over the past three years on train safety and maintaining tracks and carriages.

Prohens says the government has also spent €51 million on ERTMS, a rail safety system. It is already installed on all metro lines and is being introduced on train lines, where she says it should be ready from next year.

Island council calls for answers

Llorenç Galmés, president of the Mallorca Island Council, also takes part in the silence. He sends his support to families of those killed and to people recovering in hospital.

Galmés offers council resources if needed and calls for a thorough investigation into the cause of the crash.
