Mallorca tourism rethink: new book unveiled in Palma
Mallorca’s tourism model comes under scrutiny: a new book brings alternative views and proposals to Palma, Mallorca, on Friday at 18.15. Fundació Casa Planas and the Crigust research group at the University of the Balearic Islands will present Observatorio Costa at Casa Planas.
The book is part of a gathering on culture and sustainable tourism running from Thursday to Sunday. Now in its third edition, the event looks at how tourism changes the way people see a place, live in it and relate to it. It draws on the Planas Archive, which focuses on images of tourism, and brings together artists, researchers, archive professionals and local communities to discuss tourism’s effects.
Observatorio Costa also forms part of a research project on social and environmental change in heavily touristed coastal areas, funded by the Spanish government and the European Union. University research vice-rector Víctor Homar and geography professor Macià Blàzquez will take part in Friday’s presentation. Aránzazu Mier of Spain’s Ministry of Culture and Casa Planas director Alelí Mirelman will also speak.
