Tourism destinations now have a common way to describe and share information across digital platforms: Spain has led work on the new ISO 20525:2026 standard. The news came from Madrid on 19 October 2026. The Spanish Association for Standardisation (UNE) led the work with support from Segittur.

The standard deals with the meaning of terms used in tourism data, so destinations, platforms and digital systems can understand the information in the same way. It was developed by the international tourism standards committee ISO/TC 228, whose secretariat UNE runs.

It is aimed at destinations updating their digital systems, people who manage or publish tourism data, and organisations running tourism information platforms. UNE says the shared approach should make it easier for platforms to work together, for developers to build digital services and for destinations to tailor information.

The common terms do not rule out local detail. Authorities and destinations can add terms for their own needs while keeping their data compatible with the international model.
