Spain leads new tourism data standard for destinations

Responsible for this content: Frank Menze

Spain leads a new international tourism data standard that aims to help destinations’ digital platforms exchange information automatically. The International Organization for Standardization approved ISO 20525:2026 in October 2026. Spain’s Ministry of Industry and Tourism drove its development through the state tourism technology company Segittur, with support from the Spanish Association for Standardisation.

The standard gives tourism data a shared structure and meaning that computer systems can read. That should make it easier for different platforms to connect information and support digital services for destinations and travellers. Places can still include details specific to their own tourism offer without losing compatibility with the international model.

It is aimed mainly at destinations developing their digital services and organisations that manage or publish tourism data. Among the intended benefits are travel information better tailored to individual needs and better-informed decisions about tourism. The announcement does not say which destinations will adopt the standard or when.
