Mallorca firms push for an economy beyond tourism

Mallorca’s small and medium-sized firms want an economy less dependent on tourism: their trade group is pressing election candidates to back other industries and seek a new funding deal for the Balearic Islands. On Tuesday, 3 November, the Federation of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises of Mallorca (Pimem) put its case to the Ara Més-Front Ampli coalition ahead of the 29 November election.

Pimem president Jordi Mora wants farming, food production and other industries to carry more weight alongside tourism. He says a broader economy could create steadier, better-quality jobs and give new firms room to grow and sell beyond Mallorca.

The group wants Madrid to support compensation for freight transport and make it easier for small firms to expand. Its proposals include simpler rules, tax incentives for investment and better access to finance.

Pimem is also asking the coalition to push the central government for a change to regional funding. Mora says the current system fails to account properly for island life, high living costs, population pressure and the extra cost of public services. Tuesday’s meeting was the first of several Pimem plans with parties contesting the election.
