Balearic tourism jobs climb 2.1% to 192,369

The Balearic Islands recorded 192,369 tourism workers registered with Social Security in August, a 2.1% rise on the same month last year. The total covers jobs in hospitality, travel agencies and tour operators. Turespaña released the figures on Monday.

Most of those registered workers — 177,921 — were employees. A further 14,448 were self-employed, but that number was down 0.5%, the sixth-largest fall among Spain’s regions.

Across Spain, tourism employment rose by 69,580 people, or 2.3%, to three million in August. The sector accounted for 13.8% of everyone registered with Social Security nationwide.

Hospitality added 37,584 registered workers across the country, including 13,929 in accommodation and 23,655 in food and drink services. Travel agencies, meanwhile, showed a drop of 1,972 workers.

The Ministry of Industry and Tourism says the travel-agency figure does not reflect a real fall in employment. Changes to Spain’s business activity codes have moved some work previously classed under travel agencies into other categories.

Employees made up 83% of tourism workers nationwide and their number rose 2.5%. Self-employed tourism workers increased 1.4% overall, although the number in travel agencies fell 4.2%, also affected by the classification change.
