Mallorca tourism: Prohens calls for visitor limits
Mallorca tourism cannot keep growing by simply bringing in more visitors, Balearic Islands president Marga Prohens says. She called for limits on tourism and for success to be judged by the value it creates rather than visitor volume at the Forbes Economic Summit 2026 in Madrid on 24 September.
Prohens said the islands could not continue to grow at the present pace or under the current model. The main challenge, she said, was finding a balance in managing tourism’s success.
She wants quality to count ahead of quantity, with seasons no longer judged only by whether more tourists arrive each year. Tourism, she said, should be measured by more than numbers.
For Prohens, the sector reaches beyond hotels, sun and beaches. She included innovation, artificial intelligence, digitalisation and new technologies in her vision for Mallorca and the Balearic Islands.
Holiday tourism remains an economic engine for the islands and contributes business leadership to Spain, she said. But Prohens also put sustainability, quality of life and residents’ wellbeing at the centre of the debate.
